According to Harper, although fully autonomous vehicles are currently prohibited on UK roads, by the end of 2024 they may be allowed thanks to government-sponsored Automated Vehicles (AV) legislation that is currently making its way through parliament. There will be a framework.

Critics of the technology, which has been tested in the US, say the vehicles could cause accidents, and regulators in California have ordered General Motors' driverless car unit Cruze to take its vehicles off state roads after a crash in October. .
