Expend4bles Explodes with Razzie Nominations: Is This the Franchise's Most Explosive Flop Yet?
The dust has settled on another year in film, and while awards season usually celebrates the best of the best, the Golden Raspberry Awards, affectionately known as the Razzies, take a gleeful detour to honor the worst of the worst. And this year, there's one film that's practically begging for a trophy (or maybe a trash can lid): Expend4bles.
Sly Stallone's geri-action franchise took a nosedive with its fourth installment, racking up a whopping seven Razzie nominations, including:
Worst Picture
Worst Director (Scott Waugh)
Worst Screenplay
Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel
Worst Supporting Actor (Sylvester Stallone)
Worst Supporting Actress (Megan Fox)
Worst Ensemble Cast
Ouch. That's a Razzie gauntlet if I've ever seen one.
Critics weren't kind to the film, with many calling it a tired retread of the same old explosions and testosterone-fueled antics. Audiences weren't much kinder, with the box office barely registering a blip. So, what exactly went wrong with Expend4bles?
Some theories include:
Franchise fatigue: After three previous films, the novelty of watching aging action stars blow stuff up may have worn thin.
Rehashed formula: The plot and action sequences felt predictable and uninspired, like a greatest hits album of past Expendables moments.
Lack of fresh blood: The addition of Megan Fox wasn't enough to inject new life into the franchise, and some felt her character was wasted.
Of course, the Razzies nominations themselves are a form of publicity, and some might argue that any publicity is good publicity. Whether Expend4bles wins big on Razzie night (ceremony is on March 9, 2024) remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: this franchise has definitely earned its place among the Razzie royalty.
But hey, at least they're not alone. Other Razzie nominees this year include The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, so the company isn't bad. Still, for a franchise that once promised over-the-top action thrills, Expend4bles has stumbled into Razzie territory in a major way. Let's see if they can blast their way out of this one.
